“I think I look sexy in a sling,” I said, looking at myself in the mirror of the hospital room I had been sitting in for what felt like a full day and a half now. In truth, it was probably closer to about three hours, but hospital time always ran a bit slowly for me. I hated the place, and I always had. In truth, I probably always would, even if I wasn’t exactly feeling too bad at this particular moment.

“What kind of painkillers do they have you on, Andy?” Bennet asked, grinning at me from the foot of my bed. I was happy she was here. After the doctor saw me and told me that I’d be released today, he informed me that someone else would have to come here and pick me up. I couldn’t drive back by myself or anything, and not just because a loon in a clown mask had just stolen my car. There were the painkillers to think about as well as the fact that I couldn’t really lift my left arm.

I didn’t want to call Oyster. He had already been to enough hospitals while dealing with Lilly, and besides, someone had to be there with her while she healed up. There was Kay, but she was pulling up the slack for me, investigating the other end of what I now knew to be an extremely complicated case. That left me with Bennet. Not that she was a second choice, by any means. Though I considered the woman my friend now, the truth was that there would never be a version of me who didn’t look at her and remember the teenage girl who stole my heart with her smile and locked it away behind those kind eyes. Sometimes, I felt like a part of it was still locked away. Other times, I wondered if that part always would be.

She looked like a vision in the reflection of the mirror, like an angel sent down from heaven to tell me that everything would be okay. The idea crossed my mind that if she were to tell me in this moment that everything was going to be okay, I might actually believe her.

“The kind that makes you not mind all that much that a knife was just jammed into your shoulder, I guess,” I replied, turning from the mirror and looking at her directly now. The smile on my face wasn’t budging. “I’m kidding. The painkillers have actually kind of worn off by now, if the returning throb in my shoulder is any indication.” I shrugged. “I guess you just make me feel young.”

“I remember young you,” she cooed. “So, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

“Your memory must be better than mine, in that case,” I replied. “Because I only remember the best parts.”

She giggled. “Be careful, Andy Winslow. You’re going to get yourself into trouble.”

“Look at me, Bennet Brooks.” I flexed a little to bring attention to my shoulder, braced by the sling.
